The Woman in Black: A Ghost Story by Susan Hill - KBOD

The Woman in Black: A Ghost Story by Susan Hill
$9.99 (5/28/2012)

The classic ghost story by Susan Hill: a chilling tale about a menacing spectre haunting a small English town.

Arthur Kipps is an up-and-coming London solicitor who is sent to Crythin Gifford—a faraway town in the windswept salt marshes beyond Nine Lives Causeway—to attend the funeral and settle the affairs of a client, Mrs. Alice Drablow of Eel Marsh House. Mrs. Drablow’s house stands at the end of the causeway, wreathed in fog and mystery, but Kipps is unaware of the tragic secrets that lie hidden behind its sheltered windows. The routine business trip he anticipated quickly takes a horrifying turn when he finds himself haunted by a series of mysterious sounds and images—a rocking chair in a deserted nursery, the eerie sound of a pony and trap, a child’s scream in the fog, and, most terrifying of all, a ghostly woman dressed all in black. Psychologically terrifying and deliciously eerie, The Woman in Black is a remarkable thriller of the first rate.

A Texas Ghost Story by Arley Owens Jr

Jasper Miller, foreman of The Double Cross Ranch owned by billionaire T. Wayford Cross, enjoys the simple life of a cowboy and daydreams about selling his unique breakfast sausage in grocery stores. While mending a fence he hears a woman cry for help but can’t locate her anywhere. At sundown he heads for the ranch house only to be further confused when something white manifests in the near distance and soon vanishes, leaving him worried he might be losing his mind—first hearing things, then hallucinating.

Bafflement replaces those concerns when one of his hands tells him about seeing “a flash of white last night at suppertime” and that Drake Jensen—whose fence repair Jasper completed—had complained about hearing things before leaving for his father’s funeral. The feminine cry rings out again, followed by a flash of white identical to what he’d witnessed before. Once more searching for her in vain, Jasper decides someone must be pulling a prank. But the woman finally does appear—dressed all in white—and dematerializes, leaving no doubt she’s a ghost.

T. Wayford gets a taste of Jasper’s sausage and deciding to market it, sits him up in an apartment in Arlington. There he meets voluptuous Selma Russell who he learns is connected to the waif on The Double Cross and is almost as ethereal. Caught in a love triangle between Selma, T. Wayford’s daughter, and the woman in charge of producing his sausage, Jasper discovers it’s him rather than the ranch that’s being haunted. He surmises the two specters are motivated by revenge, but for what, he has no idea. Knowing he’ll never have peace until he finds out, Jasper leaves no stone unturned until he uncovers the mind-boggling truth.

The Haunting at Red Feathers by Peter Meredith

There is nothing more frightening in the world of horror, than a ghost story that is actually true. When Peter takes his new wife Stacy, up to the mountains for a weekend of fishing, hiking and hopefully some intense cuddling, their day starts off great, when they think they find the perfect spot. The seclusion of the little lake seems at first to be a plus, but they soon realize, that there is a reason the area around the black waters and the looming hills is empty. "Don't let the night catch me here!" These are the words that run through their minds as the day folds in on itself with terrifying speed, releasing something blacker than the night.

This book contains three stories, all of which are paranormal in nature. The first two are works of non-fiction, true to life ghost stories, if you can believe it, but the third is completely fictional.

The Apostle (1997) - KFMOD

Robert Duvall is one of my favorite actors and the first time I saw this movie I was hooked. The power of his acting is simply astonishing. He breathes such life into his character that it feels as though you're watching a documentary rather than a movie. I highly recommend this movie to anyone who is a fan of Robert Duvall or dramas.

Dancing Through Fire by JoAnn Hague

In 1775, Sarah Himmel, reared parentless in the Moravian Christian community of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, marries a stranger to accompany him as a missionary to the Indians of the Ohio wilderness. On the banks of the Elk's Eye, Wind Maiden dreams of a man but marries a boy. Despite the two women's differences, friendship grows. Against the backdrop of the Revolutionary War, through joy and misery, birth and death, they sustain one another until strength triumphs over weakness and life reigns over death.

DANCING THROUGH FIRE is a carefully researched account of the events from 1775 to 1782 which culminated in the massacre of more than 90 Christian Indians at Gnadenhutten in eastern Ohio. All historic events are actual, and all secondary characters are real.

Although fictional, the novel's main characters are accurate depictions of Indians and Moravian missionaries of the Revolutionary War period.

Interview with Rachel Hunter: Author of Empyreal Fate

When did you begin writing?

I've written stories ever since I can remember. *chuckles* I used to write everything down by hand onto tiny strips of paper, which I would then fold and staple together into little booklets. You could say I established my own library at a young age - a library of miniature paper books. But it was my collection; it was my starting fancy. Reading has played a tremendous part in my early inspiration for writing as well. One could always find me with my nose in a book. I read to everyone: myself, my brother, my parents, and even my cats. Oh, yes - the magic of words has always ensnared me. So my best answer is: I've always been writing. The Muse claimed me when I was young.

What genres do you write?

I greatly enjoy writing poetry, but my main focus (and the genre of my newest novel release, Empyreal Fate) deals in speculative fiction, including fantasy, science fiction, and steampunk. I appreciate various genres, from mystery, historical fiction, to horror (which is actually another facet to speculative fiction). Yet the pull of the fantastical has always been strong, and I find myself ever-drawn to different realms teeming with creatures of all imagination. What could be better than being transported to another world or a foreign dawn?

Who do you imagine you're telling a story to as you write?

Honestly, it's like I'm watching the story take place in front of me, so it's more that the story comes to me through the characters, and I am simply the scribe recording their tale. Sometimes they move so fast, their words and actions are all a blur; but other times, their movements make all the sense in the world. I must only open my eyes to see it, to understand.

What's your latest book about?

Ah - Empyreal Fate - Part One of my Llathalan Annal fantasy series. What is it about, you ask? To be brief, it is an account of elves and men - their land at the brink of war. Betrayal, true love, an ancient decree... Llathala is not well. Yet a man and elf become tied in ways that are unacceptable to either race. Is it love? Is it curiosity? Is it Fate..?

Aye - that is for you to find out. Though I will share the blurb with you below:

Filled to the brim with forbidden love, an ancient evil, and a nation in disrepair, Empyreal Fate is a tale of riveting bravery and mortal corruption.

The land of Llathala lingers on the brink of war between men and elves, a dark history surrounding each race. Stirred by tensions of the land, a shadow of the past reemerges, taking precedence in reality and consuming the very soul of mans’ mortal weakness. Darrion, the son of a poor laborer, is ensnared in a hostile world, forced to choose between loyalty to his king or the counsel of the elves. Yet Fate has other plans in store, tying his course to Amarya, an elven royalblood of mysterious quality and unsurpassable beauty. But this forbidden connection incites betrayal from members of their own kin, marking them as traitors to the crown. In a land torn asunder, only Fate’s decree can allow such love to coexist with an ancient enmity.
Behold: A Llathalan Annal: Empyreal Fate – Part One.

Which authors inspire you?

Many authors have inspired me throughout the years, so it is difficult to select only a few. For that matter, individuals of various professions have inspired me some way or another - even when it comes to writing. However, to list a few, I will mention David Eddings, Tad Williams, Terry Brooks, Kurt Vonnegut, and Edgar Allen Poe.

What's your favorite book?

Now this is one I truly cannot answer plainly, for I have read so many wonderful (and not so wonderful) works, and they have all been unique in their own way. The thought of even comparing some of them seems unfair, as they have each inspired me in one form or another at different points in my life. So, I must simply say that it would depend on my mood for reading, writing style, and genre.

Why did you choose independent publishing?

I enjoy the close-knit feel to Hydra Publications, for, as a small press, an author doesn't get lost in a list of names or titles. Everyone is extraordinarily supportive of one another, and we each help out with promotions, interviews, and the like. Also, Hydra is wonderful about working with every author to meet his or her needs, from edits, cover art, to marketing in general. In fact, I was given the freedom to choose my own cover artist: Peter Bradley - who was also great about tailoring his work to fit my ideas for what I pictured on the cover. Overall, Hydra, as an independent press, has given me more freedom as an author - more so than I had even imagined from the beginning.

What one piece of advice would you offer other indie authors?
Read, challenge, explore, think, dream. Experience. Live. Be. We are all individuals with our own stories to tell. Be the voice that stands out from the crowd. Don't write what you think others want to read; write what inspires you. Feel the passion of your own words, for if you do not feel that passion first, how can you expect a reader to feel it as well?

Thanks for having me here today.

Interview with Jody Morse: Co-Author of the Series Howl and The Briar Creek Vampires

When did you begin writing?

As soon as I knew how! When I was in elementary school, I loved the Babysitters Club and would write my own fan fiction. Once I was in middle school and high school, I began writing my own short stories and poetry. In college, I concentrated in writing. For a few years, I wrote web content full-time, but fiction was always where my heart was.

What genres do you write?

Mostly young adult paranormal romance/suspense, but I am plannng to cross genres. My sister, Jayme Morse (who I co-author with), and I are currently working on a romantic suspense for adults and have several other projects lined up for the near future. Those range from fantasy and dystopian to literary fiction.

Who do you imagine you’re telling a story to as you write?

There’s this quote by Toni Morrison that best explains it: “If there’s a book you really want to read but it hasn’t been written yet, then you must write it.” I imagine myself as the reader and try to write what I would want to read.

What’s your latest book about?

Right now, Jayme and I are putting the finishing touches on a book called Surface, which will be the first in our new young adult paranormal romance series. I don’t want to give away too many details yet, but it takes place in a beach town and involves sirens. It comes out in June.

Which authors inspire you?

Lois Duncan has probably been my biggest inspiration and influence, especially when it comes to the young adult paranormal genre. Her books (Stranger With My Face, Locked in Time, and Down a Dark Hall) were some of the first that I ever read that had paranormal elements.

What’s your favorite book?

It’s so hard to choose just one – I love so many! The Last Song by Nicholas Sparks, 19 Minutes by Jodi Picoult, Cereus Blooms at Night by Shani Mootoo, and the Mill River Recluse by indie author Darcie Chan are some of my favorites. I also love getting involved a good series. I’m kind of addicted to the Pretty Little Liars series, the House of Night, and the Hunger Games.

Why did you choose independent publishing?

I stumbled on JA Konrath’s blog, A Newbie’s Guide to Publishing, (A Newbie's Guide to Publishing) and learned that self-publishing had evolved from what it used to be. A lot of indies were having success because of the Kindle and Nook. So, Jayme and I decided to give it a go, and I’m glad we did. It’s a great way to get your stuff out there and retain your creative control. We get to choose our covers, set our deadlines and prices, and make other decisions that would normally be left up to a publishing company.

What one piece of advice would you offer other indie authors?

Write every day. If you don’t know how to start your book, then start in the middle or at the end, but start somewhere. Also grow a thick skin because no matter how good your book is, you’re bound to get some negative feedback, and some of it might hurt if you’re not prepared for it. Just remember that you can’t please everyone. Focus on the positive instead of the negative.

Interview with Desiree Finkbeiner: Author of the Ethos Series

When did you begin writing?

I’ve been writing and illustrating since grade school. My mother had kept dozens of my little books in her keepsake chest, and we got them out a few years ago to share a laugh. Though, in the beginning I was more interested in art and poetry, entering my work in shows and contests. I won certificates and awards all through grade school, middle school and high school but most of them were for my art. I wrote my first middle-grade, fantasy chapter book of approx 30,000 words at age 12. So that's when I really became interested in writing.

What genres do you write?

Fantasy mostly. Especially urban fantasy/paranormal romance/action
adventure... but I've also been working on some sci-fi steampunk.

Who do you imagine you're telling a story to as you write?

I actually imagine myself in the story, interacting with the other
characters. It helps make it more realistic for me and provides a
great escape. I hope that others also enjoy the escape my worlds
offer.

What's your latest book about?

In short, it’s written in first person, from the heroine’s
perspective. She’s a normal college girl until she has an accident
that warrants a trip to the hospital. Her injuries heal quickly and
her lab results are off the charts. It’s a mystery as to why bizarre
happenings are overshadowing her, until Kalen, the hero, enters the
picture.

He reveals to her an ancient prophecy that transcends time and the
planes of existence, challenging her take on reality, and Brianna is
thrust into a race for her life. With the balance of their worlds at
stake, Kalen takes Brianna to his world, where he can better protect
her… unanswered questions would be addressed by the council that
resides in the mountain cities of Ethos, so they take up their
journey.

During their trek to the mountains, they undergo a series of trials,
and find themselves facing the ultimate choice. Throughout their
perilous adventure, they are tempted by forbidden love, knowing they
can never be together, but it’s that same temptation that leads them
to find their greatest strengths.

It’s a story about integrity, duty, agency and self mastery. I wanted
to write something that would teach a moral, inspired by an apparent
lack in action by the people of today. People everywhere seem
complacent, and the liberty of those same people is on the brink of
destruction. My series is a call to action; to act or be acted upon.
It’s about choice, the very thing that makes us superior beings… and
the same element that can ultimately lead to destruction, if not
exercised wisely.

Which authors inspire you?

My favorite authors have changed over the years and continue to
change as new books come out and my perspectives change. Some select
favorites: Frank Herbert, Anne Rice, J.R.R. Tolkien… But scripture
has influenced my writing more than anything.

What's your favorite book?

Scriptures are my favorite, I read them every day.

Why did you choose independent publishing?

Hydra Publications is a small press out of Indiana. When I sent Ethos
out, I got three offers with a couple weeks. But the family-like
atmosphere at Hydra sold me. I enjoy the friendships I've made there
with the other authors and the owners were super cool people.

What one piece of advice would you offer other indie authors?

Whether you go the route of self-publishing or going with a small indie
press, relationships are king. Establishing lasting friendships with
other authors, bloggers and readers is vital to your success. Keep an
open mind and always strive for professionalism. I've already met
some authors out there who wear such big heads that they come across
as crass and snooty. Nobody likes to work with stuck-up high hats. Be
yourself, be humble and always appreciate small victories. They add
up, and your network will grow faster by being kind and giving than
by only plugging your own work every where you go.

Most people view self-promotion as spammy and annoying. There's a
time and place for everything, so avoid overdoing it. Start by
praising other people for their efforts and it will come around full
circle. ...and most of all, keep creating!

Encouraged by their interest, and the awe and sometimes apprehension on their faces, she is editing some of the dozens upon dozens of diaries in her files. Volume I contains Down the Ghost Trail, which chronicles the start of T. M. Simmons’ ghost hunting career at the haunted Myrtles Plantation in St. Francisville, Louisiana. Crossing Over explains how she learned to help lost souls cross into The Light. In Midnight Ferry, a late-night phone call sends her into a confrontation with a nasty ghost-witch who meant horrific harm. The other three stories are ones she chose as some of her favorites. She has also included a few definitions of her beliefs and the rules by which anyone whom she allows into her ghost hunting life must abide. These stories are true, and each new volume will be offered as a prelude to the upcoming fictional Dead Man mystery series. Dead Man Talking, which should be available as an ebook within a few days of this first volume, will be a fun, scary romp in the paranormal world. Part of the first chapter is included at the end.

The Real by James Cole

A SEQUENCE OF SEEMINGLY UNRELATED STRANGE AND TRAGIC EVENTS TRANSFORMS THE ORDINARY LIFE OF JEREMY SPIRES INTO ONE FILLED WITH ADVENTURE, INTRIGUE, AND PERIL.

Who wouldn’t want to become cognizant of secret realms?
When seven hippies burned to death 39 years ago in a tragic fire, a ghost story was spawned. The legend, passed down by students at the local University, centers on Claire Wales, a.k.a. the Hippie Queen. Graduate student Jeremy Spires thinks nothing of the tale until he stops on a deserted road to help a stranded motorist, Grady, who retells the ghost story as if it and the Hippie Queen are real. Despite Grady’s warnings to stay away, Jeremy and his devoted girlfriend, Jinni Malone, plan a camping trip to the very place – Reefers Woods – where the hippies died. After a near-death experience, an ultra-vivid dream and bizarre visions of children roaming about, Jeremy wonders if there could be some extraordinary power manifested in Reefers Woods. Can Jeremy, in his role as a cynical scientist, dare to believe in the supernatural? Can he discern what is real and what is not?

Do you know what it is to burn?
No? Neither did Jeremy, at least not before a girl, a beautiful stranger, kissed him unexpectedly in a bar. In the days that followed, and despite his love for Jinni, Jeremy cannot turn his thoughts away from the provocative encounter. When Jeremy gives in to his forbidden desires and seeks out the mysterious Monika, he is thrust into a shadowy subculture of sex, drugs and rock-and-roll, of which he had been completely unaware. It is Monika who asks the question, and subsequently reveals what it is to burn.

I can’t believe she’s dead!
The intrigue and suspense intensifies after a ritualistic murder at the University draws the attention of the nation. After learning that the victim is someone very close to Jeremy and after finding evidence linking him to the crime scene, the police focus on Jeremy as a suspect, forcing him to search for the real killer and to try and make sense of the many unforeseen twists and turns his life takes.

What is THE REAL?
THE REAL may be described as a murder-mystery, an action-adventure and a supernatural thriller, deftly folded into one. The observant among you might see the novel through an allegorical lens or even as an extended fable. Regardless, this book can be experienced on several levels. It is up to you, the reader, to decide how deeply you wish to delve.

Mrs. Doubtfire (1993) - KFMOD

Robin Williams truly shines in this film. There are so many great lines and even though this movie is almost 20 years old, I still find myself quoting some of the lines. If you've never seen it, you're really missing out.

Jesus contends with dinosaurs. Marcel Duchamp describes what happens to a Dadaist who has a monkey's tail grafted to his butt. Whether he is explaining how Anne of Green Gables destroyed the world, or outlining Thor's new PR strategy, Rayner entertains with wit, humor and an imagination that is one step short of certifiable.

Diablo III: The Order - KBOD

Diablo III: The Order by Nate Kenyon
$12.99 - (5/21/2012)

Deckard Cain made his way across the floor, following the footprints to an alcove in the far wall. Rotted boards clung to supports, the last remains of an ancient library. This had been a ritual chamber, many centuries before, used to summon things from beyond the human world. A portal to the Burning Hells themselves, perhaps. The shelves were empty now. He saw a speck of yellow underneath a splinter of wood and bent to pick up a corner of parchment paper, curled and speckled with mildew.

Something moved in the shadows to his right.

He whirled, holding the light up. For a moment it appeared as if the shadows themselves were alive, bunching and swirling like ink in water. At the same time, a voice like the distant moan of wind drifted through the empty room and raised the hairs on the back of his neck.

Deckaaaaarrdddd Caiiinnnn . . .”

Cain felt a strange doubling, a memory of a night many years before, when he was just a boy. A whispered voice calling to him, just like this. He backed away, fumbling in his rucksack with one hand, holding the lighted staff with the other against the darkness. Already he was doubting himself: had it just been the wind moving through the broken remains of the building above him, a trick his mind had played after so long in the sun?

The voice came again, a sound like bones scraping together in the grave.
“Your ghosts are many, old man, and they are active.”

A grating of metal over rock seemed to come from everywhere at once. Once again a pool of black smoke thickened and then dissipated, only to reassemble somewhere else: a shape carrying a sword, the form of a man, but with eyes that glowed red with the fires of hell.

Cain knew what this was, yanked from the depths of his own mind and used against him: the image of the Dark Wanderer himself, conjured up to weaken his resolve. The smoke-shape swirled and shifted, reforming into two indistinct human shapes, one taller and clearly female, one small and delicate. Shock raced through Cain’s limbs as an older, familiar memory fought to surface. He closed his eyes against the darkness as the yawning pit of despair opened within him, threatening to pull him in. You must not listen.

***
Deckard Cain is the last of the Horadrim, the sole surviving member of a mysterious and legendary order. Assembled by the archangel Tyrael, the Horadrim were charged with the sacred duty of seeking out and vanquishing the three Prime Evils: Diablo (the Lord of Terror), Mephisto (the Lord of Hatred), and Baal (the Lord of Destruction). But that was many years ago. As the decades passed, the Horadrim’s strength diminished, and they fell into obscurity. Now all of their collected history, tactics, and wisdom lie within the aged hands of one man. A man who is growing concerned.

Dark whisperings have begun to fill the air, tales of ancient evil stirring, rumblings of a demonic invasion set to tear the land apart.

Amid the mounting dread, Deckard Cain uncovers startling new information that could bring about the salvation—or ruin—of the mortal world: other remnants of the Horadrim still exist. He must unravel where they have been and why they are hiding from one of their own.

As Cain searches for the lost members of his order, he is thrust into an alliance with an unlikely ally: Leah, an eight-year-old girl feared by many to carry a diabolical curse. What is her secret? How is it tied to the prophesied End of Days? And if there are other living Horadrim, will they be able to stand against oblivion? These are the questions Deckard Cain must answer . . .
. . . before it is too late.

An American Haunting (2006) - KFMOD

This movie got a lot of bad reviews and in a way I can see why. I grew up in East Tennessee and know the story of the Bell Witch quite well. However, if you watch the movie for what it is, and forget about the legend, it's actually an enjoyable movie with a surprise ending.

It was his pheromones that did it. With one sniff, sex researcher Leigh Fromm recognizes that any offspring she might have with the mysterious stranger would have a better-than-average chance of surviving any number of impending pandemics.

But when Leigh finds out that the handsome “someone” at her great aunt’s wake is Prince Roman Habsburg von Lorraine of Austria, she suddenly doubts her instincts—not that she was intending to sleep with the guy. The royal house of Habsburg was once completely inbred, insanity and impotency among the highlights of their genetic pedigree. (The extreme “bulldog underbite” that plagued them wasn’t called the Habsburg Jaw for nothing.)

It doesn’t matter that his family hasn’t sat on a throne (other than the ones in their Toilette) since 1918, or that Austria is now a parliamentary democracy. Their lives couldn’t be more different: Roman is routinely mobbed by paparazzi in Europe. Leigh is regularly mocked for having the social skills of a potted plant. Even if she suddenly developed grace, charm and a pedigree that would withstand the scrutiny of the press and his family, what exactly is she supposed to do with this would-have-been king of Austria who is in self-imposed exile in Denver, Colorado?

Interview with J. Naomi Ay: Indie Author of The Two Moons of Rehnor Series

When did you begin writing?

2nd Grade. My 1st grade teacher asked me to write a story for the 1st grade parent’s night. I guess she wanted to demonstrate how vastly more capable a 2nd grader would be. I remember I wrote a tremendous story about dogs and cats agreeing not to chase each other all in the name of world peace. I must have been a very perceptive 7 year old. My series The Two Moons of Rehnor began about 25 years ago and has been added on to, rewritten, modified and changed about a million times in the interim years.

What genres do you write?

The series itself is pure fantasy but other than the very strange main character who is definitely paranormal, it’s almost contemporary. It’s also set off on a different planet at an undefined time in the future so that makes it a bit of Scifi too. There’s a fair amount of romance going on and there’s politics and spiritualism. Too bad there isn’t a genre call “all of the above”. That’s where I would fit in.

Who do you imagine you're telling a story to as you write?

Nobody. I wrote the whole thing figuring nobody would ever read it except me.

What's your latest book about?

The series basically tells the story of Senya, a very strange man who was created to be king of the planet Rehnor. It’s all told in first person narratives by the very normal, ordinary people who surround him. It also weaves in the stories of all these other people which I think makes it very interesting because there are a lot of perspectives and it’s very face paced. I have a relatively short attention span so as I was writing it, if anyone started to bore me, I would switch characters.

Which authors inspire you?

The classics – C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien and Jane Austen.

What's your favorite book?

Pride and Prejudice…sigh.

Why did you choose independent publishing?

Because it’s quick and easy to do and I have complete control of my stories for better or worse. I write things as I see them despite which way current political or social winds are blowing. Of course all my stories take place on distant planets so they are not at all related to what’s going on here. Not at all.

What one piece of advice would you offer other indie authors?

Patience and remember that you do this because you love it. If it turns into a quest for sales and only sales, then it will turn into work and your writing may start to reflect that. If you write what you love and you have fun with it, your readers will love and enjoy it too.
