Thomas Kinkade - The Painter Who Became an Author

Thomas Kinkade was an unbelievable artist. While some may complain about his business practices and personal behavior, no one can deny that his paintings were simply breathtaking. As one of my favorite artists, I was surprised a few years ago to learn that Thomas Kinkade had co-authored a book series with Katherine Spencer. The series, called Cape Light, contained 12 volumes and was a Christian literature series that has often been compared to the Mitford Series by Jan Karon.

Sadly, the world recently lost Thomas Kinkade along with his artistic touch. Whether he was painting "God's light" or helping pen the works of a Christian literature series, his talent was remarkable. If you'd like to see another side of the fabulous painter, why not read Cape Light?

Cape Light by Thomas Kinkade and Katherine Spencer
$7.99 (4/9/29012)

Inspired by the artistic vision of world-renowned landscape painter Thomas Kinkade--and imbued with the light of his uplifting message--this heartwarming novel introduces us to the quaint town of Cape Light, and those who call it home.

The Simpsons and Philosophy: The D'oh of Homer - KBOD

The Simpsons and Philosophy: The D'oh of Homer
$9.99 (4/9/2012)

This unconventional and lighthearted introduction to the ideas of the major Western philosophers examines The Simpsons — TV’s favorite animated family. The authors look beyond the jokes, the crudeness, the attacks on society — and see a clever display of irony, social criticism, and philosophical thought. The writers begin with an examination of the characters. Does Homer actually display Aristotle’s virtues of character? In what way does Bart exemplify American pragmatism? The book also examines the ethics and themes of the show, and concludes with discussions of how the series reflects the work of Aristotle, Marx, Camus, Sartre, and other thinkers.

2 Free Kindle Books by Homer

As you grow older, you no longer look at the classics as something you "have" to read. They become enjoyable and you find yourself seeking out new books to consume. The following free kindle books are just two of the most classic books of all time.

The Iliad by Homer

Homer's Iliad begins nine years after the Greek armies first arrived at Troy. A plague has overcome the Greek armies because Agamemnon has refused to return the daughter of a Priest of Apollo. Achilles, the epic's central character, exposes this fact and confronts the king. Agamemnon agrees to release this girl, if, and only if, Achilles gives him his 'war-prize', Briseis in return. (from Book Rags).

The Odyssey by Homer

After ten years, the Trojan War is over and the Achaeans head for home-with varying results. Some, like Nestor, come home quickly to find things pretty much as they left them. Others, like Agamemnon, arrive home to find things considerably changed. Still others, like Menelaus, wander for a time but eventually return home safely and little the worse for wear.(from Book Rags).

Maddy's Guide to Life: Divorce by Kristina Anderson

Hi, I’m Madison. Well that’s what my mom and my teacher, Mr. Wrong (his real name is Mr. Wright), call me, but I prefer to be called Maddy. I’m 9 years old and I live in a small town in the United States with my annoying older sister Zoey, my dog Rupert, and my parents. I go to school nearby. Over the years I have learnt a lot about life and how to handle things at home and at school.

I’ve told you about Amanda before. You know, she’s the girl who thinks she’s really cool and who isn’t that nice to most of the rest of us in the class. One day Amanda got told that her parents were getting a divorce. She wasn’t like the old Amanda after that as she blamed herself and felt really angry. I was so glad that we were able to help her get through the bad feelings. That day we all found strengths we didn’t know we had.

This short story has approximately 940 words.

Early on, she replaces her diary's cheesy affirmations with sarcastic sayings, pet peeves, random factoids, and slogans she spots on bumper stickers and bathroom walls. With luck, her love of words will help the two of them find their way back home, where she can put away her diary for good.

Howl of the Wolf by Diane Rapp

Drako is a planet on the fringe of civilized space suitable for colonization, but a society of telepathic wolves already occupies the world. When a colony ship lands on Drako, the wolves try to communicate but find no intelligent creatures to mindspeak with them. The wolves watch as colonists develop Drako into a recreation planet for wealthy tourists. Settlers became feudal lords, desert sheiks, oriental samurai, and ordinary peasants depending on their level of investment. After several generations of catering to tourism, the monarchy revolted against technology and closed Drako to offworld visitors. Distaste for technology mutated into superstitious hatred, and anyone caught with spacer tools or weapons could be executed.

In civilized space scientists invented Transfer, a means to insure immortality by moving a human mind into a clone—free of hereditary defects. Every fifty years (a span) an individual qualified for Transfer but the tradeoff was large debt to the Institute. Governments toppled and war left the Institute in total control. Individuals were virtual slaves to Institute rules, but the inventors of Transfer became a threat.

When the medical spaceship Zebulon flees from an Institute death sentence, the captain doesn’t know an assassin infiltrated his crew. They picked the remote planet of Drako for their exile where a dying king needs an heir, and hereditary lords hate spacers. When the king forces Captain Donovan to compete for the crown to protect the lives of his crew. Faced with superstitions, hatred, and eminent danger, the crew must adapt to a feudal society without using modern tools or weapons. Fortunately the Transfer process enhanced the natural talents of each person and might give them an advantage. When Kriegen, the leader of a wolf pack makes telepathic contact with Donovan, he gains a valuable ally agains Jarrack, the Institute assassin who is determined to kill him.

Nothing's Sacred by Lewis Black - KBOD

Let's continue the comedy theme with a book from one of the world's greatest stand up comedians. I absolutely LOVE Lewis Black. However, I will warn those that are sensitive to certain issues (religion, politics, etc) to skip this one. However, if you love a good time and can laugh at anything funny, you must read this book.

Nothing's Sacred by Lewis Black
$11.99 (4/3/2012)

You've seen him on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart offering up his trademark angry observational humor on everything from politics to pop culture. You've seen his energetic stand-up performances on HBO, Comedy Central, and in venues across the globe. Now, for the first time, Lewis Black translates his volcanic eruptions into book form in Nothing's Sacred, a collection of rants against stupidity and authority, which oftentimes go hand in hand.

With subversive wit and intellectual honesty, Lewis examines the events of his life that shaped his antiauthoritarian point of view and developed his comedic perspective. Growing up in 1950s suburbia when father knew best and there was a sitcom to prove it, he began to regard authority with a jaundiced eye at an early age. And as that sentiment grew stronger with each passing year, so did his ability to hone in on the absurd.

True to form, he puts common sense above ideology and distills hilarious, biting commentary on all things politically and culturally relevant. "No one is safe from Lewis Black's comic missiles." (New York Times)

You have been warned....

Was Cleopatra the last Egyptian pharaoh?
Can you really make diamonds out of tequila?
Is the platypus actually poisonous?

A flip of the page reveals whether you're right or wrong as well as more information on the true trivia--and why you might've fallen for the fake fact. You'll really need to know your sh*t if you plan on correctly calling bullsh*t.

Rocking the Pink: Finding Myself on the Other Side of Cancer by Laura Roppe - KBOD

Rocking the Pink: Finding Myself on the Other Side of Cancer by Laura Roppe
$10.37 (4/2/2012)

In 2008, just as Laura Roppé was poised to burst onto the music scene, her doctor called her with news that left her spinning—she had been diagnosed with an extremely aggressive form of breast cancer. Just days earlier, she had signed a dream-come-true contract with a record label; now, she wasn’t even sure how much longer she had to live. Never one to back down to a challenge, however, Roppé gathered her courage, took stock of her priorities, and made a decision: Cancer may take my hair, she told herself, but that’s all it’s getting.

More than a cancer journey, Rocking the Pink is a quirky, charming, and poignant ode to love, friendship, and music. Roppé is unflinchingly honest and unfailingly funny as she tells the story of her odyssey: from childhood dreamer and giddy valet parker to the Hollywood stars to disillusioned lawyer, wife, and mother; from budding songwriter and late-blooming recording artist to determined cancer survivor. Full of raw emotion and humor that will make you laugh through your tears, Rocking the Pink is a chronicle of discovering one's true self through life’s difficult circumstances—and a testament to the hang-in-tough, take-no-prisoners attitude it takes to kick cancer’s butt.
